‘He called me this morning.’

Midnight. The witching hour. Well, almost.

We were in a pub off the beaten track, out Hale way some miles from the sea where the Mersey was wide and flat with inlets and sandbanks lit by the lights of the ICI chemical works and the Welsh hills distant smudges melted by moonlight. The lounge-bar where we sat was all dark beams and glinting brass with wall lights dripping pools of yellow on a crimson carpet flush with chunky stone walls. Late night drinkers were ensconced in booths made from hardwood settles comfortably upholstered. A man with a cigarette drooping ash clung to a stool by the bar, one leg preserving balance, Dickie Henderson doing his quarter-to-three Sinatra routine. In the far corner a piano was being played softly and with ineffable poignancy by a huge black woman with hair like a Vesuvius eruption seen on a dark night. From time to time she paused to sip from a cocktail glass standing on the piano – I guessed White Satin, but that might have been racist humour kicking in and it could have been Black Velvet. Once, she caught me watching, and gave me a smile and a wink.
